|What could be better that a walking holiday in the Dubrovnik Riviera. Possibly the most famous destination in Croatia, Dubrovnik is referred to as the jewel of the Adriatic. Retaining its status as the most important Mediterranean port from 13th century onwards, rich merchants have left the city plastered with magnificent Gothic renaissance and baroque buildings.
The walk through the Old town of Dubrovnik starts at the well known landmark of Onofrio's fountain, which has provided the city with fresh water for centuries, to the Old Port which was once the key of Dubrovnik's trading and maritime success. En route are the St Saviours and Grandiose Franciscan and Dominican churches. Walking along the fortification walls encircling the Old Town gives a wonderful perspective of the whole town and lovely views and great photo opportunities. The 3 minute chair lift to mount Srd gives a breathtaking view of the Old Town and the Elphiti islands.
Legend has it that Richard the Lion heart was shipwrecked during a storm on his way back from the crusades on the island of Lokrum opposite the Old Town. Lokrum has a 12th century Benedictine monastery and lovely hidden bays. The Trestno Botanical gardens overlooking the island of Lopud are worth a visit. In the gardens there is an arboretum set amongst beautifully preserved architecture from the Gothic –renaissance period including the summer manor, pavilion, aquaduct and baroque fountain.
For those interested in the arts, the five Renaissance chapels contain valuable paintings by some of world's most famous masters. The Elphiti islands of Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan offer wonderful adventure and water sport opportunity. Your base for this holiday will be the island of Lopud which is only 2 miles wide and with no cars. The Dubrovnik elite have used it as a hideaway for decades.
For somewhere so idyllic it is rather easy to get to. Lopud also has sandy beaches specially Sunj with its gently shelving white sand.
